Silanes are organosilicon compounds based on a silicon-hydrogen backbone partially substituted with organic groups. Organosilanes are primarily used for surface functionalization, enabling durable bonds between inorganic and organic materials.
Industries
In the construction industry, silanes are widely used in cement- and lime-based dry mortars to reduce water absorption or as hydrophobic impregnations for concrete, natural stone, or façades. They effectively protect structures from moisture, freeze-thaw damage, and corrosive agents.
In the adhesives industry, silanes act as adhesion promoters, enhancing the bond between substrates and adhesives—especially on challenging surfaces such as glass, metal, or concrete. They also play a key role in moisture-curing adhesive systems based on silane-terminated polymers.
In paints and coatings, silanes improve adhesion, increase scratch resistance, and enhance chemical and UV resistance. Additionally, they help disperse fillers and pigments more effectively, contributing to long-term formulation stability.
